I'm 53 years old, from Philippines.

Metro Manila in the Philippines is a vast urbanized region. It has become a magnet for poor rural families seeking better opportunities. The migration and the population growth have expanded the urban sprawl. The landscape is littered with pockets of slums and squatter colonies. Squatting exists even in supposedly middle class communities such as the Robinson Village in Oranbo, Pasig City, Metro Manila.

The family of Angeling Salazar has illegally stayed in the open space of the village for 26 years now. Amado, the late husband, first stayed in the vacant lot of his employer. When the lot was sold, he moved his family to the nearby open space surreptitiously and perhaps with the tolerance of the few homeowners at that time. As the village grows, the use of the open space for the benefits of the community becomes more urgent. After repeated requests over many years, the Salazars finally agreed to move out when two lots in a government relocation site and financial assistance were offered by the community.

The Philippine Decent Housing Initiative represents the efforts of the Robinson Village community to help the Salazar family relocate and build a decent house at the site. It hopes to become a non-profit, non-governmental organization , replicating the efforts to help similarly-situated indigent families build decent houses in lots they will own. It will also cooperate with communities in Metro Manila faced with similar problems as the Robinson Village.

This website is our window to the world for:

o Disseminating information on our mission;

o Seeking assistance from public and private organizations, charitable institutions and individuals who wish to share their material and financial blessings to help accomplish our mission. Technical assistance in low-cost housing technology is most welcome.
